We are looking for committed and motivated students who are interested in empirical research and are willing to work intensively on an exciting topic.
Note: Our supervision capacities are currently fully booked. We will be able to supervise new bachelor theses from mid/end of March.

If you would like to write a thesis (Bachelor's, Master's or project thesis) at our department, start choosing a suitable topic in good time and follow the steps we have put together for you.
On this page you will find:

1. Requirements Check
- You fulfil the general requirements for final theses according to your examination regulations.
- You have successfully completed at least one module at our department or are currently enrolled.
2. Select topics
- Select a topic from the advertised options (see below).
- Alternatively, you can propose your own topic within
our research areas or as part of your own Tech Startup project. However, the topics we advertise will be prioritised in terms of our capacities.
3. Submit application
Please send an e-mail to die-thesis(at)hhu.de with
- Your name
- Matriculation number
- degree programme and semester
- the courses you have successfully completed in your degree programme (e.g. transcript of records)
- Your desired subject area (see below) OR a topic proposal for one of our research areas / your own tech start-up project
4. Wait for feedback
- After submitting your application, you will receive feedback by e-mail from your supervisor within 10 working days.
- Please refrain from making enquiries before this deadline has passed. If you have not received a response after 10 working days, you are welcome to contact die-thesis(at)hhu.de.
5. Topic accepted
- As soon as your topic has been accepted, an initial meeting will be arranged with the supervisor.
- In this meeting, the topic is narrowed down further and specific requirements are discussed.
6. Create a research proposal
- Based on the discussion with your supervisor, you will prepare a two- to three-page research proposal.
- The aim of the research proposal is to develop a common understanding of the topic and to prepare the work well.
7. Register your thesis
- After your supervisor has approved the research proposal and a second reviewer has been found, you can register your thesis
in the Studierendenportal under examination registration. You will then receive confirmation of your registration by email. Please indicate your second supervisor in the ‘Comments’ field. - After registering, you will receive confirmation of your enquiry by email. As soon as your application has been officially confirmed, you will receive another email with your submission date.
- For the Bachelor of Computer Science programme after PO 2021: Please also submit an application for the individual examination for module 5999 ‘Final Seminar’ in the Studierendenportal
- Please note that you have three months after successful registration to complete a Bachelor's thesis and six months to complete a Master's thesis.

Once your supervisor has approved the research proposal and a second reviewer has been found, you can register your thesis
in the Studierendenportal under ‘Examination registration’. You will then receive confirmation of your registration by email. Please enter your second supervisor in the ‘Comments’ field.

Yes, you can propose your own topic as long as it is within the research areas of our chair. It is also possible to propose a topic within your own Tech Startup project. Include a brief description and relevance to our research areas in your proposal.

Yes, all work at our chair involves independent data collection.
Yes, we regularly offer topics in cooperation with companies, start-ups and other institutions. You can find an overview in the section ‘Topics in cooperation with external organisations’.
The language of the thesis depends on the topic and the agreement with your supervisor. Most topics can be worked on in German or English. You will find details of your preferred language in the topic overview.
